Carved in the colonial manner

O'Siyo! The colonial powder horn is one of those few items thats combines the utilitarian with the artistic. Made by artisans and common folk alike, it gave the owner a chance to personalize his creation. He may have decided to record his journies and adventures,or create a scene from his his memories or fantasies. If of European ancestery he might choose symbols of his people, its culture or its mythology. If a Native American he would seek to inscribe his horn with designs that might reflect his clan or designs of power that would enable him to have spiritual help in his quest for martial or hunting success.

Some horns reflected the simplicity of their owners, other their flambouyant style. it was all individual, a work of art made by the owner or commisioned by him  from an artisan. Soldiers with a small knife and a little talent traded their work to others. Large cities and town had horners who made horns for those who desired them. Horns would be craved , stained and scrimshawed in a large combination of designs and style.

The art of the horner reached its peak in what was called the Golden Age of horns circa 1745(King George's War) through 1782( The end of the revoltution) Although others like the Tansel family created beautiful horns harkening back to the golden age, the most treasured horns are from this period.

Here is your chance to own such a horn at a reasonable price. Choose from those already for sale or we can design a custom horn to suit your needs. Thank you for visiting my site.
